Auspicious
Superstition
2024
Auspicious Superstition is a series of wearable jewellery pieces reflecting my exploration of the idea of “luck” during my 本命年 (birth year). In Chinese folk belief, this year, which occurs every twelve years, can be challenging as its astrological energy is thought to conflict with one’s zodiac sign. As someone born in the Year of the Dragon, I became acutely aware of this idea throughout the year.
A common practice to counter potential bad luck is to wear red items such as red thread bracelets or red underwear. Though I am not usually superstitious, I noticed myself attributing difficulties to my birth year and adopting some of these customs out of subtle worry. This internal tension shaped the development of the work.
The series consists of an earring, a necklace, and three brooches, incorporating metal, ceramics, and thread. The recurring Chinese knot motif ties the pieces together, interpreted through techniques such as forming knots in silver wire, pressing knot patterns into metal and clay, and transferring thread textures with glazing.
