It's for Your Own Good is a design justice project created to question and satirize the measures women take to ensure their safety in public, to challenge the public normalization or the default acceptance of women’s adoption of safety rituals.
I grew up experiencing more 'concern' from my parents compared to my male sibling, often hearing statements that implied as a woman I am inherently vulnerable. As a result, I complied with the anxiety-inducing safety routines imposed on me under the guise of 'caring for my well-being' and 'keeping me safe.’ Taking this project as the opportunity, I aim to dismantle the normalization of safety rituals imposed on women by planting these questions in the audience’s mind: why is so much attention and responsibility for safety directed at girls? Why are women "assigned" to be victims by default? Why are safety precautions for women normalized? Is it really for my good?
